Orange Democratic Movement Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has hinted at strategy to join new political coalitions after Kibra polls.
In a statement that could cause storm in coming weeks, Sifuna on Wednesday said ODM party shall forge new alliance after Kibra poll, accusing NASA affiliates of sabotage.
The party has fielded Imran Okoth for November 7th polls. The seat was left vacant following the death of Ken Okoth.
“We have our friends from Nasa who want to use the opportunity to formalise their divorce from the coalition,” Mr Sifuna said.
Sifuna said Raila Odinga's party has no interest in working with Amani National Congress, Ford Kenya and to some extent Wiper party which have fielded candidates in Kibra.
“Out of this by-election, we are going to count our friends and our enemies. New alliances will be formed. We are counting our friends like Maina Kamanda (Jubilee), Cleophas Malala and Geoffrey Osotsi (both of ANC) in this election. This same team will spearhead the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report and proceed to the 2022 elections,” Sifuna said.
Mr Musalia Mudavadi of ANC has endorsed Imran Okoth while Moses Wetangula is supporting Eng Ramadhan Khamisi of Ford Kenya. Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper also supported Khamisi.
Ford-Kenya Secretary-General Eseli Simiyu, however, dismissed Sifuna’s sentiments, saying: “ODM is the problem in the coalition. But I understand where they are coming from. They want to cut links with the other partners so that they don’t demand their share of the political parties funding.”
ODM was awarded Sh4 billion by the court. NASA affiliates have been demanding share. The three parties have supported Raila Odinga's presidential bid in the last two polls.
Sifuna said Mr Okoth will be the first handshake MP, yet another indication of a possible coalition between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga in 2022 polls.
