Three people on Friday morning perished while two others were rushed to hospital in a critical condition after an attempt to siphon fuel from a tanker that had rolled turned tragic.
According to eye witnesses, the incident occurred at 7 am after a lorry that was transporting fuel to Uganda lost control and plunged into a ditch at Ngenyilel junction along Eldoret -Webuye Highway.
Speaking to this writer, Joan Nanjala, who lives by the roadside said the incident occurred in the morning as she was preparing to take her kids to school.
“I was preparing breakfast when i heard a loud bang, I cautioned my children not to get to the scene after it emerged that an oil tanker had rolled over,” said Nanjala.
While confirming the incident, Lugari OCPD Benard Macharia warned the public against coming close to oil tankers which he described as a time bombs.
“I’m appealing to the public to stay away from oil tankers in case of an accident because lives have previously been lost due to negligence. We should learn from previous incidents,” he said.
Ngenyilel MCA David Singoei blamed the rampant cases of accidents in the area on narrow roads and lack of bumps .
Survivors were rushed to Lumakanda District Hospital while the deceased were taken to Chebaiwa Hospital mortuary.
