Elderly people in Subukia have lamented over the elderly cash transfer programme citing that it was full of corruption and tribalism.
They said that out of the 41 elderly persons in the area who received the stipulated Sh2,000 every month, 34 of them were from Kijabe.
Speaking during a public Baraza, the elderly claimed that the move benefited only one community as the rest were pushed away from the project in the area.
According to Joseph Njoga, 69 there was no beneficiary from the Kisii community who were many in the area “We would like to know why even after registering three times, we always find our names removed from the official register,” said Njoga.
Another resident Gerald Ondiek said that there was no transparency in the area and the committee that was put together to come up with a list of the elderly was corrupt.
“They have clearly refused to show us the entire list, a clear indication that it was tampered with an action which is not right at all,” said Ondieki.
He cited that the residents should be allowed to elect their own committee members so that fairness could prevail.
“I am appealing to the government to also increase the number of people who will benefit from this programme,” added Ondieki.
An official at the Subukia Gender office, who sought anonymity, cited that the missing of names must have been a typing error when the names were being put in the official register. “Unless there was an anomaly, the list we have is okay,” claimed the officer.
