The anti-FGM Board Chairperson Linah Kilimo has revealed that the larger Gusii region stands as the third highest in the rating of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practice.
Kilimo noted that Gusii region comes after North Eastern and Kuria regions which stand at position one and two respectively.
She also noted that the FGM exercise is high in the Gusii region because trained health personnel have replaced the traditional circumcisers in carrying out the practise.
She was speaking in Kisii town when she graced the graduation ceremony of 42 girls that received a week long training on alternative rite of passage that initiated them to womanhood.
Kilimo alleged that some health care givers in hospitals are colluding with the parents of the young girls to mutilate them after they realized the health experts could prevent deaths from excessive bleeding resulting from the cut traditionally.
Kilimo asked the health workers engaged in the FGM practice to stop.
"People of Kisii are educated but still practice FGM out of ignorance,” she said.
