Women in Keumbu Location of Nyaribari Chache Sub-County, have been encouraged to apply for Women Enterprise Fund (WEF) loans.
They have been advised to take advantage of the low rates charged by the fund, compared to other commercial financial institutions.
Keumbu senior chief, Jonathan Machoka also discouraged women from taking high-interest loans from unregistered schemes which he said are out to exploit them.
In an interview with this writer at Keumbu market, Machoka said that women in the area lack adequate information about WEF. He says some of them fear that if they default, they will be forced to part with family property.
Ironically, Machoka said the same women fearing government-funded loans go ahead to borrow from village credit schemes and other unregistered groups, only to default and have their property attached auctioned to recover the loans.
"I am encouraging women from this area to take advantage of the government-sponsored loans from the Uwezo and Women funds, to access credit for their business financing, instead of taking high-interest loans from unscrupulous credit schemes in the villages, which ultimately harass them and auction their property to recover the loans," said Machoka.
