Nakuru county women leaders have asked parents to be on the lookout and help their children prevent cases of incest during the festive season. Led by the county Women Rep, Mary Mbugua, they argued that a majority of cases occurred when there were family gatherings. “During the holiday seasons a lot of children get defiled by their relatives. This is because of the huge crowds in the house and in some cases parents fail to track the whereabouts of their children as they are engrossed in conversations and catching up,” said Mbugua. They were speaking to the press in Naivasha where she added that there was also need to ensure that the boy child was equally given the same attention. “We have increased cases of sodomy especially in the families. We hope that the same protection and care would be given to the boy child,” she added. Nominated member of county assembly Esther Magere also cited that the children should be encouraged to speak out in case they are defiled. “Majority of the children talk about the ordeal while it is too late. I would urge all parents to talk to their children every evening and find out what happened during the day,” she said. Magere, who is also a social worker, said that they had also received cases of serial rapes during the holiday seasons.
