Operations have resumed at Manda airstrip in Lamu, hours after the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) had announced its indefinite closure, after an attack by the Al-Shabaab militants.
All Lamu-based passenger flights had been disrupted by the Sunday morning closure, which was triggered by the Al-Shabaab militants attacking the facility while targeting an adjacent Camp Simba Naval Base which houses both Kenyan and American military personnel.
In a statement quoted by Daily Nation, KCAA Director-General Gilbert Kibe said; "This is to notify all aviation stakeholders and the general public that air services have fully resumed in Manda airstrip after the morning closure due to the Lamu County attack. The closure is hereby revoked and the normal services set for resumption."
The closure had affected flight companies like Fly Sax, Skyward Express, Fly 540 as well as Air Kenya.
Following the attack which KDF said was an attempted security breach at the facility that was immediately repulsed, Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed arrests for five people.
KDF had earlier said 4 Al-Shabbab militants were killed with the US Africa Command confirming the attack on a base housing its military personnel.
"The situation is being monitored, with Al Shabaab already having claimed responsibility. We will keep you updated with emerging details and facts," read a tweet by US Africa Command quoted by Nation.
