A two-year-old kid has died while another one is receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital after their house caught fire in Sengani village in Matungulu sub-county in Machakos county.
The incident was confirmed by Matungulu Deputy Sub-county police commander William Ngombo who said that the fire broke out in the morning hours and the grandmother was not around.
Ngombo said that such incidents should always be reported to the police as early as possible.
"Hadn't you called me first it would have taken long for me to get the news. Yes it's true the fire broke out in the room where the kids were sleeping, they were rushed to Kangundo hospital and referred to Kenyatta hospital," said Ngombo.
"Unfortunately the boy aged two years died on the way," he added.
He said that the cause of the fire was not established immediately but investigations have begun.
According to neighbours, the grandmother had gone to the shamba to uproot bean plants leaving the two kids asleep.
The fire, however, did not spread to other rooms since neighbors were fast to put it out.
