Egerton University senate has announced that students will resume to sit afresh for their 2014/15 end of semester examinations on January 12 next year following their recent strike.
In a notice signed by the Registrar of Academic Affairs Prof Seth Owido, students from the four campuses, (Njoro, Nakuru Town satellite, Baringo, and Nairobi) are expected to report to their respective campuses on the slated date to re-sit the examinations. The examinations were cancelled early this month after the students from the university’s main campus at Njoro rioted for claims of tough examination rules.
The exams will be conducted for two weeks up to January 23, however, the students from Njoro campus have further been ordered by the university to pay a fine of Sh 5,122 each for the damages caused while rioting on December 7.
According to the university senate, International students, those with disabilities, on-residents and those from other campuses have been exempted from the penalty.
The institution indefinitely closed all its campuses on December 8, and sent all students away for early Christmas vacation following a riot by the students over what they described as "punitive" examination rules imposed by the university administration.
According to the students, the university administration had released a notice the previous week, demanding that students with fee balances clear them before they could sit for the end of semester examinations.
Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed during the strike which saw the university’s business centre and other structures set blaze.
The fire was contained by firefighters from Nakuru before it could cause more damages.
