The Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) Uasin Gishu county chairman Peter Odima has put on notice employers who employ minors that they will be arrested and prosecuted since they are denying them their right to education.
Speaking in his office on Friday, Odima said that there has been an increased rate of employers employing children under the age of 18 years of age and under-paying them.
“Am handling over 20 cases where minors have been employed and at the end of the month they are either not paid or are under-paid since they cannot fight for themselves,” he said.
He said that he has started investigations in the county for employers who employ minors and if found, they will be arrested and prosecuted.
“According to our constitution, it is against the law to employ minors since they are supposed to be in school and not working and employing them is denying them the right to education; COTU will not allow that," he said.
He urged the residents in the area to help him in the fight against child labour by reporting anyone employing a minor while promising that the information will be treated as private and confidential and stern action would be taken against the perpetrators.
