Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruyoit has dismissed calls not to have a Kalenjin or a Kikuyu vie for presidency in 2022.
Cheruiyot said the calls were meant to discourage Deputy President William Ruto, who is a Kalenjin, not to join the race to the State House in the 2022 general election.
He said the DP is qualified to seek the country's most powerful position and won't the intimidated to drop his presidential bid.
The vocal Senator revisited Ruto's alleged assassination plot meetings at La Mada Hotel, and accused some unnamed forces of an attempt to 'hawk fear' so the DP's allies can stop looking into the problems facing their followers.
"Kalenjins won't be on the ballot in 2022. William Ruto will present his credentials like any other qualified Kenyan and seek support allover including ours. The monkey business of LaMurder types hawking fear down on us whenever we address issues affecting our people should cease," Cheruiyot tweeted on Friday.
Among prominent leaders who have said a Kikuyu or a Kalenjin should not be elected president in 2022 include; Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo and renowned lawyers Prof Makau Mutua and Donald Kipkorir.
"I agree with Governor Waiguru that we can't have this ethno majoritarian rule anymore! We must push for ethnic cohesion in this country. Central shall have 35 yrs in power by 2022. Kalenjins have had 24 yrs. You have to wait until 2032. Why do you think your Presidency is a must?" Odhiambo said in a tweet directed to Ruto.
Mutua warned that Kenya will burn if the two communities continues dominating country's leadership.
"Take this to the bank. The political experiment called Kenya will die if either a Kalenjin or Kikuyu becomes Kenya’s PRESIDENT in 2022 — the only two groups that have colonized that office since independence. Act wisely and thank me later," the outspoken lawyer said.
