Nakuru County Chief Officer in charge of Public Health Dr Samuel King’ori has revealed plans to turn Nakuru North Cemetery into a recreational park.
According to the King'ori, the county government has drafted a bill that is aimed at changing the management of public cemeteries.
“Nakuru North Cemetery is one of the heritages of this town and we want to mark it in a special way like the world war graves in Europe and elsewhere,” Dr King'ori said as quoted by Nation.
He said the Bill has given the county government rights to oversee he cemetery.
“The maintenance of this cemetery and planting of flowers will be done by the county government,” said Dr King’ori.
Reports on Nation indicate that the county will purchase equipment to be used in maintaining the cemetery, and also get another land to be used for burial.
“We floated the Expression of Interest notice but nobody has come forward to show interest in selling land to the county government,” Dr. King'ori said.
He claimed it had not been easy for the county to obtain land for development as there were no willing sellers.
The developments are said to be efforts of growing the economy of Nakuru town.
