Chief Justice David Maraga has urged the National Assembly and Senate to embrace mediation in a bid to resolve the Division of Revenue Bill 2019 standoff.
Maraga directed the Speaker of the Senate to appoint members of the mediation committee, to deliberate on the issue with representatives from the National Assembly.
“This court is really willing to give an advisory opinion on this matter as soon as possible but the constitutional process has to be completed,” Marag said as quoted by Citizen Digital.
Maraga's remarks came after Parliament nominated nine members to deliberate over the Bill with the Senate.
The National Assembly has named Aden Duale (Majority Leader), John Mbadi (Minority Leader), Cecily Mbarire (Majority Whip) and Junet Mohamed (Minority Whip).
The house has also picked Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, nominated MP David Sankok, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa, Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu and Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya to the committee.
The Senate is expected to unveil its team to debate the matter as counties stare at a financial crisis.
MPs have agreed to allow National Treasury disburse Sh316.5 billion to counties while the Senators have insisted on a Sh335.6 billion allocation.
On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta, who spoke during his visit to Nakuru, said the government does not have more money to add to counties.
