City lawyer Steve Ogolla has welcomed a ruling by an Australian court to release former celebrated news anchor Esther Arunga on parole over son's death.
Arunga was on Thursday convicted by Queensland court of being an accessory to the murder of her three-year-old son, Sinclair Timberlake, in 2014 at their family home in Kallangur, Australia.
The 38-year-old was imprisoned for 10 months but will not serve the jail term after she was released on parole.
Quoting a biblical verse that insists on the importance of acting justly and showing mercy, Ogolla lauded the ruling and termed it as a 'pleasant reenactment of the moral force of the law'.
"Esther Arunga's release on parole is a pleasant reenactment of the moral force of the law. See to it that justice is done, but let mercy be your first concern, [Micah 6:8]. It shall be well," Ogolla tweeted.
The lawyer had on Tuesday asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene in the case and help the former broadcast journalist who was staring at a possible 25 years jail term.
"Esther Arunga needs support. If convicted, AG (Attorney General Paul) Kihara should negotiate an agreement between Kenya and Australia, and request her transfer to Nairobi under the Transfer of Prisoners Act, 2015. Once home, the President can release her under parole. LSK (Law Society of Kenya) should help her set up practice," Ogolla said.
The former KTN presenter on Monday admitted to having lied to police that Sinclair passed on after falling down the stairs when she had observed her husband, Quincy Timberlake, punching in the boy's stomach.
Quincy, who is currently admitted at a mental health hospital in Australia, is facing murder charges for Sinclair's murder.
