Kisumu Medical and Education Trust director Peter Apamo, said that parents need to accept the reality that their teenage children are sexually active hence allow them to opt for the long term methods of contraceptives.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with journalists from the lakeside region, Apamo noted that most young girls are not ready to share with their mothers or both parents for fear of either being victimized or looked at negatively.
“Most parents are living in denial that their children are still sexually inactive and this should not be the case in the world we are living in today. This often leads to future disappointments from the children’s part,” said Apamo.
He added that parents needed to realize that through contraceptives, their children can avoid the stress that comes with unwanted pregnancies.
“Family planning’s major roles include planning when exactly you are ready to have a child, the number of children you want to have, and the period intervals between your children. For the teenagers then the aspect of being ready to have a child,” explains Apamo.
The Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) worker also told the press that parents need to understand their teenage children to prevent cases of disappointments.
