Athi River Township MCA Michael Mutua, has called on Mavoko Risidents to harvest water in the long rains for farming.
Mutua said the locals should take advantage of the rains being experienced in the region to do massive production of crops for commercial purposes.
"Let us all take advantage of the rains currently experienced in Mavoko Sub County to do engage in extensive farming for commercial purposes," said Mutua.
Mutua who to this writer at his office in Athi River town on Wednesday said the anticipated El Nino rains will be beneficial to Mavoko residents.
He argued that given that most parts of Eastern Kenya region were semi-arid and did not support much agriculture, it was an opportune time to tap and preserve rain water for irrigation.
Mutua said if the water was well managed then the farms in the region would produce high yields claiming the land was naturally fertile.
He urged both the youth and men to join women in farms for joint efforts in a bid to achieve high yields albeit for one season only.
Mutua said if the rain water during this season is well utilised and most of the bare tracks of land in Mavoko Sub-County tilled, the region will be saved from food shortage in the short-run.
