One person died and scores of others were left injured on Tuesday afternoon in a road accident at Soysambu, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

The midday accident involving a Gilgil bound matatu happened a few kilometers from the Notorious Mbaruk black spot.

Seventeen people were taken to St Marys Mission Hospital, Gilgil two of them with serious injuries while one died on arrival at the hospital.

Speaking to journalists at St Mary’s Hospital, one of the survivors, Njeri Kinja said that the Matatu was speeding and was also overloaded.

‘‘We heard the rear tyres burst and as a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle forcing it to land in a ditch,” said Njeri.

The nursing officer at the hospital Falicio Marangu said that two of the patients require specialised treatment in hospital with intensive care unit facilities.

“We are making arrangements to transfer them to Rift Valley General Hospital in Nakuru, most people sustained injuries on the chest, head, hands and lower limbs,” said Marangu.

He also added that they had managed to stabilise all of them.
