Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno has asked universities and colleges in the county to partner with the government and spearhead development through research.

Speaking at his office when he hosted University of Eldoret Vice Chancellor Prof Teresia Akenga yesterday, Chemno said development can be propelled through research.

He added that many problems like diseases, poverty and unemployment can be addressed through research.

Chemno noted that students in institutions of higher learning have been exposed to information and that they should use the same to help change the society.

“We are calling on universities and colleges across Uasin Gishu to partner with us through research so that we can fight some of the pertinent problems facing people,” he said.

Chemno said that the county government is open and will welcome and also accommodate ideas on how to achieve development goals.

To boost research and development, the deputy governor said a specific department will soon be established at the county headquarters to coordinate research activities.

Chemno also revealed plans by the county government to have funds allocated to research in the next financial year.

On her part, Prof Akenga urged the county government to sponsor of the varsity projects.

She said that the varsity is facing some financial problems specifically on development, adding that things will change if the government can chip in.

Prof. Akenga also called for the deployment of enough security to the institution saying that students and staff are concerned of their security.

She observed that the massacre of students and staff at the Garissa University College has created fear and concerns on students and staff in other institutions of higher learning.
