Veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere has weighed in on acting National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani's latest directives towards taming waste of public finances.
Yattani has directed a halt to trips of state officials to foreign countries for benchmarking, in a bid to save the nation some of the money being wasted in unnecessarily expenditures.
But Koigi now says that the same should have began by straining the Executive arm of government, which he believes is leading the way in wasting taxpayers' monies.
Speaking on Saturday, he cited President Uhuru Kenyatta's huge delegations whenever he leaves for foreign trips, wondering if he carries the groups to cheer his speeches.
"I don't see why the president should take 80 people with him to foreign trips. Could it be so that they can cheer his speeches? Because at times you can lack people to cheer you (Sijui kwa nini Rais aende na watu themanini safari za ngambo? Sijui kama anawabeba ili wamshangilie anaposoma hotuba? Maana wakati mwingine waweza kosa mtu wa kukushangilia )," he said.
The former Subukia MP made the remarks during an interview on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening.
He said that the same is the reason behind Kenya's current financial problems, considering that most of the people who accompany the president don't have any relevance to his trips.
As a former Assistant Cabinet Minister, he stated that most of the people in presidents' delegations normally use their time abroad to engage in shameful actions.
"This is a total loss, people are travelling there in pursuit of alcohol and women (Hii ni hasara tupu, watu wanakwenda kule kutafuta wanawake na pombe)," he added.
