The family of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno on Wednesday commemorated her first anniversary.
The event was attended by a few family members and friends as they renewed the calls for justice following the brutal murder of the student.
Sharon, who was seven months pregnant, left deep scars in the family after she was found lifeless in the forest.
A handful of friends and relatives trickled at the family’s Magare home in Homa Bay County to share the fond memories of the student who died in the hands of unknown persons.
Sharon’s macabre murder elicited mixed reactions which led to the arrest of Migori Governor Okoth Obado.
The postmortem results revealed that the child the deceased was carrying was Obado's before he was arrested and later freed.
Her family members called upon the government to ensure they get justice.
Sharon’s parents, Douglas Otieno and his wife Melida Auma were filled with grief as they recounted her last days.
The mother broke down in tears as she shared her story of love with those in attendance. Sharon’s three children were present at the anniversary.
Friends of the deceased arrived at the place donned in t-shirts engraved with the words “Justice for Sharon”.
The family asked the government to ensure that the killers of their daughter are charged in accordance with the law.
“All we want is justice for our daughter. The event today was simply to call for justice for Sharon", said the mother in a shaky voice.
Obado was charged alongside Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero.
