The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has set the record straight after a suspect in Dennis Itumbi’s forgery case claimed that his life is in danger.
The DCI on Monday said that one Samwel Gateri Wanjiru is not witness but a suspect in the alleged plot to finish Deputy President Wiliam Ruto.
Wanjiru claimed he has been receiving death threats after he signed a statement in the hearing of the case.
He wanted the statement withdrawn with immediate effect for the sake of his security.
The DCI, in a tweet, however, said: "We wish to clarify that contrary to insinuation by one Samwel GATERI that he’s a state witness in respect to criminal case against one @OleItumbi is false & misleading. The true facts are that he is a suspect under investigations. At no time was he envisaged to be a state witness."
Wanjiru, who was a member of a Whatsapp group known as Tanga Tanga, said that the letter on the alleged assassination of Deputy President William Ruto has landed him in trouble.
He has filed an application under a certificate of urgency seeking to be removed from the matter for the sake of his private life.
“That the said officers further forcibly seized and took my cellphone, combed through the contents of my phone and thereafter told me that l was under arrest and that they would go ahead and execute me if l did not confirm that l had a telephone conversation with Deputy President and that Itumbi was my link with Ruto,” said Wanjiru in his court papers quoted by K24.
He also said that he has been told that he will be taken to unknown persons so that he is taught a lesson of a lifetime for the statement he made in court in regard to the matter.
The alleged plot to assassinate the DP caused a storm in the Jubilee.
Itumbi had said he was ready to play the video of the La Mada meeting where the plot was hatched.
