Youths from Nyamira county have been urged to seize the opportunity given by social media to make sure that their leaders are accountable for their actions and to set their agendas.

Kitutu Masaba MP Mr. Timothy Bosire who paid a courtesy call to Matunwa youth group on Sunday said that some youths were being used by errant politicians to defend them on social media instead of seizing the opportunity to advance their quest and put those very leaders in check.

He said that social media had become a tool for character assassination and campaigns and wondered why youths had failed to use it for more meaningful purposes.

“During our time, we never used to have direct contacts to leaders but with social media, things have changed. However, it is discouraging that youths have become their own enemies since they advance wrong agendas by using social media to assassinate the character of some leaders. That isn’t the right way to go,” he said.

Bosire who also doubles as the ODM national treasurer said that social media has been used elsewhere to advance quests for change and to push for development.

“When you look at other parts of the world, we have seen youths using social media to advance their quest for transparency and good governance. However, I am particularly disappointed with our own youths who have become compromised by ill motivated politicians to misuse the social sites by advancing their selfish interest,” he said.
