Residents of Nyamira County have been urged to turn up in large numbers during the Bunge Mashinani proceedings at the sub-counties to channel their proposals through the assembly.
Speaking on Tuesday at Nyamaiya grounds during Mashujaa Day celebrations, Joash Nyamoko said the proceedings are long overdue since they promote a direct interaction between residents and their representatives.
Nyamoko said MCAs cannot be able to table all the issues affecting people they represent at the ward level and urged residents to embrace the Bunge Mashinani initiative as the best method to speak to their leaders.
“It’s not true that Bunge Mashinani is a waste of taxpayers’ money. As representatives, we have to be closer to the people so that we get to know problems directly facing you. MCAs cannot be able to take all the problems to the floor of the house and therefore, you have an obligation to channel problems at sub-county level,” he said.
He said the exercise had already started fulfilling its intended purpose after residents from Manga Sub-County turned up in large numbers on Tuesday last week to table issues affecting them.
“As you speaker, I am happy with the kind of reception at Manga. Residents showed how the exercise spearheaded by the county government will help them. That is a challenge to the critics of the county assembly,” Nyamoko added.
He said the resources pumped towards sustaining the program are not equivalent to wastage of tax payers’ money as some professionals had termed it.
“This is a wakeup call to our professionals that propaganda will take us nowhere. Our work is to listen to what people have to say, we come up with legislation to compel the executive yield to the demand s of people. Our oversight role will also get a boost through views we will be getting from residents,” he said.
