Residents of Mataara sub-location in Gituamba ward can now breathe a sigh of relief following the completion of a Sh200 million water project funded by the World Bank.

The project that is yet to be launched officially will see more than 200,000 residents get clean water in their homes.

Mataara Water project manager Geoffrey Muigai underscored its benefit saying the supply of clean water to the residents of Mataara would help curb the frequent outbreak of waterbone diseases in the town and its environs.

“For a long time, Gituamba ward residents have suffered serious cholera, typhoid and other water related ailments due to consuming dirty water drawn from highly contaminated water sources but now with clean and unlimited water, I believe the diseases will go down instantly,” he said.

Muigai appealed to the residents to apply for the water supply and urged them to jealously protect the project from vandals and bad politics for its sustainability.

“It is with much joy that we will now start consuming clean and treated water; a time for us to keep off waterborne diseases is due and we greatly thank the World Bank for supporting this crucial project,” Martin Muriu, a resident said.

Preparations for the official launch are underway, and according to Muigai, the area MP Kigo Njenga is expected at the launch.

He was speaking Tuesday at Chania Water fall the source for the project water.
