Anne Nyokabi, one of the residents told HiviSaSa.com that most parents are neglecting their children adding that disabled children in the area are being denied access to education and other social-economic basics.

“I want to urge the county government to intervene and ensure disabled children are not mistreated,” she said.

Ms Nyokabi who is also a children's right activist said that the constitution guarantees freedom of disabled children and their access to education and other basic needs that the society benefits from.

She said that the government has to intervene quickly and ensure those who deny disabled children of their rights are arrested and charged in court.

On Wednesday, residents rescued a nine-year old disabled girl who had been locked in a cage for three days without food.

The angry residents claimed that the mother’s child had been mistreating her for along time. Their attempts to beat the mother were thwarted by security officers who arrived at the scene that had turned ugly.

“It's very sad that parents can really neglect the children they gave birth to,” said Moses Ashimosi, a resident.

In her address, area women leader Marion Wanjiku said that cases of disabled children being neglected are high noting that parents with children with disability should give them up for adoption if they are not able to care for them.

Ms Wanjiku added that any parent found mistreating his or her disabled child will be arrested and taken to court.
