Lecturers in Kisii University and Mt Kenya University – Kisii Campus have been warned against giving handouts instead of appearing in class.
Speaking after a joint meeting between officials of the two institutions, Prof Maurice Amutabi and Prof Albert Getabu said the mode of issuing handouts, which is rampant in Kenyan institutions, has been used by many lecturers to skip classes.
“We can no longer condone lecturers who issue handouts instead of making physical appearances in class. This is an archaic method that is unacceptable in institutions of higher learning,” said Prof Amutabi.
“We will start cracking the whip on notorious lecturers who have persisted with this unscrupulous method of delivery despite our continued warnings to them,” Prof Getabu.
Getabu asked other institutions to keep surveillance on the issue in order to save higher education from declining from its current status.
“As a country, we have made tremendous steps in delivery of education requirements. Therefore, no one will be allowed to draw us back. I urge other institutions to keep checking on the same so that we can curb this menace,” he said.
They asked lectures to use handouts as supplements to class delivery as required by various educations acts.
“We are not saying that handouts are bad. In fact, yellow notes are required in any mode of teaching but they have to act as supplements,” Amutabi said.
