Muretihi said that majority of the water leeways in the area had already been encroached by humans, and hence storm water did not have easy access through the area.

Speaking to journalists in Naivasha, Mureithi argued that houses had covered much of the drainage system in the area, making it hard for rainwater to flow freely.

“With the heavy rains in our area, we are afraid that there will be cases of drowning especially since the water is carried down a slope. In some cases, vehicles are even swept down due to the terrain of the area. We have many cases of drunk people who find themselves victims of the water,” she added.

The MCA cited Site and Services, Kabati, Prison and Kihoto as the affected by poor storm water drainage areas.

“Our culverts are also of poor quality and once it rains, the water sweeps away all the trash into the drainage system. We have cases of polythene bags and shoes that are swept into the culverts and hence they block the rainwater. This has seen the water overflow to the main roads, causing accidents,” she added.
