The government has been urged to come up with a kitty for providing fees for nurses and doctors seeking to go back to school. Viwandani Member of County Assembly Eunice Mureithi said that this was the only way to curb the increased doctor and nurses shortage in the area. She cited that there is an urgent need for specialists in various areas yet they were not available. “We need specialists on physiotherapy, nutritionists and counselors. Majority of the nurses in the area cannot be given the job since they do not have the required papers and hence cannot help the sick,” she added Her views were echoed by the Nakuru Minister of Health Daniel Mungai who argued that there were many job vacancies yet it was hard to get the specialists. “There is always room for education and we are appealing to organizations like Higher Education Loans Board to consider our doctors. Sometimes due to the various commitments they have it becomes hard for them to pay for school fees using their salary,” he added “Majority of the patients do not get adequate care as we have a shortage of specialists. We feel that they will provide better services if they go back to school,” Mrs Mureithi added Naivasha Nurse in charge, Mary Gacheru openly welcomed the idea.
