The Ministry of Health has attributed the delay in construction of toilets for Nakuru Public Primary schools to the areas poor terrain. In an exclusive interview with Dr Samuel Mwaura, The Chief of Health Officer in Nakuru county, it is very expensive to construct pit latrines in the area due to the rocky and loose soils in the area. He cited that Nakuru has 620 public Primary School which have a population of 358,811 of which 181,738 are boys and 177,073 are girls. While admitting that there is an acute shortage of toilets in the schools, Mwaura argued that the loose soils required pit lining which was expensive for the county. He however blamed the free primary education for the increased enrollment which forced the schools to admit students despite the lack of infrastructural development. The PS revealed that in 2013/2014 the county government spent Ksh. 4 million to construct pit latrines in six schools which consisted one block which could accommodate 12 students at once “Among the schools which benefited were Kaptembwa primary, Kivumbini primary among others benefited from sanitary facilities set up by Non-government organizations.” he added Mwaura attributes the poor sanitation to the lack of connection to Sewerage services and water supplies which have been disconnected Due to unpaid bills.
