Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has dismissed claims that he has banned people from merry making during the weekend of Census.
On Saturday, the national census exercise which takes place after every decade, is scheduled to start, with Matiang'i ordering closure of entertainment joints from 5pm.
In a press conference on Thursday, the powerful minister insisted that those who take alcohol can still drink as long as they avail themselves for counting.
He said that one can buy and drink at home or walk to the local bar, drink but show up at his or her home for counting from 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
“Some people have made the directive [barring the opening of bars past 5pm on August 24 and 25] look like the world is coming to an end. You can still enjoy your alcoholic drink while at home. Alternatively, you can drink at a local joint and when it clocks 5pm, you can go home to be counted,” said the CS.
“[Some suggesting I would have stopped them from watching] the Liverpool versus Arsenal match, you can still do that at home,” he said.
On Wednesday, Borabu business community chairman accused Dr Matiang'i of making unilateral decisions on issues that affect the economy.
Mr Samuel Onderi, who addressed reporters in Nyansiongo, urged the minister to withdraw his ban, arguing that it was dangerous to the economy.
"You can't close businesses for Census. We have spouses, children and even parents who can count for our presence. The minister should adhere to the law and stop harassing us," he said.
