Intelligence reports may have after all saved ODM leader Raila Odinga from a possible onslaught from Deputy President William Ruto during Bob Collymore's memorial service, it has been claimed.
On Thursday, Mr Odinga had planned to meet a section of ODM leaders from Kisii and Nyamira at Capitol Hill before proceeding to the memorial service where he was set to speak.
But acting allegedly on leaked security reports, Mr Odinga had to cancel the trip to All Saints Cathedral before jetting out of Nairobi leaving several of his guests stranded.
The teams that were set to meet him the very day did not have any communication that the planned meetings had been cancelled and indication that Odinga was ready to meet them.
A source at Capitol Hill said that there were reports Dr Ruto was to use the occasion to attack Mr Odinga over the Resist Safaricom campaigns he called for in 2017.
"I can guarantee you that Baba was set for the day but intelligence reports forced him to abruptly fly out of Nairobi. He even left his guests unattended. He couldn't just take part in a function where someone was planning to embarrass him," he said.
After 2017 polls, Mr Odinga called for a campaign to boycott various government friendly companies with Safaricom being a casualty. Mr Bob Collymore, who died last week, was the target of NASA.
The Abagusii ODM leaders kept waiting for several hours before holding a brief meeting with Mr Odinga's Chief of Staff one Mondo. He asked them to plan for another day without giving any explanation.
The team was under Kisii ODM Chairman Sam Omwando and his Nyamira counterpart Richard Kaka. Also present was former Nyaribari Chache MP Dr Chris Bichage.
"We were set to meet him on Thursday but we had the meeting cancelled last minutes. There is no doubt that we were in the office very early to see him," said Mr Omwando when reached for comment.
Hours after the Gusii team left Capitol Hill, Mr Odinga is understood to have jetted back but went straight to his Karen home in Nairobi.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Dr Ruto were among those who attended Collymore's memorial. Also, Musalia Mudavadi attended the function.
