Former Harambee Stars coach Bobby Williamson has been awarded Sh55m by the High Court for wrongful dismissal. The Friday ruling is a big blow to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) that is facing a financial crisis. The Scot was fired in 2016 after a series of poor results.
Reacting to the ruling, FKF president Nick Mwendwa vowed to appeal the decision.
"As the Federation, we will appeal the decision by the court to order us to pay that amount," Mwendwa told Goal on Friday.
The ruling comes a few weeks after Football Kenya Federation was ordered by Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to pay Algerian tactician Adel Amrouche Sh108m for wrongful dismissal.
"With the current situation, we cannot afford to pay the amount; lest you forget, we also have 108 million to pay Adel. It is something we will appeal and hope it goes our way," he added.
Adel Amrouche joined Kenya national football team as a manager in February 2013 replacing then interim manager James Nandwa who took over from Henri Michel. Unfortunately, Mr Amrouche was sacked after Kenya lost to Lesotho in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifications.
FKF financial situation worsened after one of its main sponsors SportPesa withdrew from the Kenyan market over what the management termed as an unfavorable business environment. This has made the federation not to pay defending champions Gor Mahia their prize money after bagging a record 18th title.
