The National Assembly has been asked to extend the term of Commission for Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) whose term is due to expire in January 2016.

The commission’s chairman Charles Nyachae has reportedly written to Parliament to ask for extension of the term until key constitution implementation laws are adopted.

A section of Nyamira County Assembly members led by Majority Leader Mr Peter Maroro and his Minority counterpart Jason Mogusu on Wednesday expressed their support for the CIC and urged Parliament to consider extending the term till 2017 elections.

They said the move will ensure laws like the third gender rule implementation are worked on with the Nyachae led commission.

“Personally I think he (Charles Nyachae) has done well with the commission. Parliament should consider extending the term of all commissioners to tackle effectively various pertinent issues some of which parliament has dragged its feet in implementing,” Maroro said.

Mr Mogusu said the move will ensure the commission completes the work it started in 2011 without necessarily leaving certain issues unresolved.

“We all agree that the commission has done extremely well but some constitutional issues like the third gender rule are still pending. It will be appropriate if their stay in office is extended to facilitate solution seeking to pertinent constitutional issues,” he said during commissioning of Manga-Nyambaria Road.
