The school had earlier been served with a directive to improve hygiene standards, and after the school failed to meet the directive it was closed.

Speaking to the press during the shutdown Thika public health officer Peter Mburu said that the public office could not allow innocent children to contract diseases from the school’s lack of hygiene.

He said that if the children needed to answer a call of nature and the school had no facilities, then the children could not restrain themselves from polluting the whole environment. This in turn, he said, created a huge mess. Mburu also said that the public office was on the lookout for more institutions with similar problems and that they would rescue the children from institutions that failed to meet hygiene standards.

He went on to urge the private schools to make sure they provide the necessary sanitary facilities to make sure the children were comfortable.

“We have closed this school until the administration finds a solution to the sanitation problem in the institution. They will call us here and we will inspect the situation before we can give a go ahead to reopen the school,” Mburu said
