Nyamira Senator Okongo Mong’are has dismissed the resignation of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru terming it a ‘desperate’ move by the Jubilee administration to show how committed the government is in fighting graft.
Waiguru, who has been under pressure to resign over alleged graft in her ministry bowed out of cabinet on Saturday citing ‘advice from her doctor’ as the reason for her resignation.
“I don’t see why people should celebrate over the resignation of Waiguru," the Senator said in a telephone interview on Sunday.
"She was reluctant to leave office and it is pressure from the opposition and the public that precipitated into that. She should have done that long ago when the scandal emanated."
“We all heard her requesting the president to assign her lighter duties yet she has not been cleared on the NYS scandal. I did not expect her to again ask for other assignments yet her integrity is under question."
The Senator urged the President to be proactive in dealing with corruption cases involving public workers.
“The president has the power to crack a whip on suspected corrupt people in government. He should change his tactics and face those people without fear or favour because at the end of the day Kenyans will judge is performance,” Mong’are sai.
