Police in Kisumu have launched a crackdown on criminals in the lakeside city following the killing of one of the most notorious thugs in Manyatta slums on Tuesday night.
Kisumu County Police Commander Nelson Njiri said police received a tip off that some thugs were planning to rob an M-PESA outlet in the area.
Njiri said police officers laid an ambush and waited for the thugs who declined to surrender.
He said one thug attempted to shoot at the police officers and was gunned down as two of his accomplice escaped.
He said the search for the two who escaped has been intensified within the city.
“My officers went and coumaflauged in the area and waited the thugs to arrive. When they were asked to surrender one with a gun tried to shoot the officers and was shot dead,” he said.
Addressing the press in his office on Wednesday, Njiri said locals also identified the slain thus as the most dangerous criminal who has terrorised the locals for long.
He said he has numerous cases pending before the court of law and has engaged in criminal activities across the county.
“It is good he is a known fellow here concerning his criminal activities, he has many cases before court,” he said.
Njiri lauded members of the public for working closely with the police officers to tame the runaway insecurity in Kisumu.
