Speaking to journalists during a free governor clinic in Nakuru NTSA director of road safety, Mathew Munyao, said that the officers will work alongside traffic police officers to ensure that highways remain safe.

''It is so sad to note that last year alone in the month of December we lost 304 lives, and that is why this year we want to be safe,' 'said Munyao

He added that the transport authority will also be cracking down on drunk drivers as well as drivers who drive vehicles that not roadworthy.

The officer said that with the help of universal policing, they will be able to charge drivers instantly for all traffic offences detected upon inspection.

''NTSA has come up with a short code messaging service which drivers and stakeholders in the public transport sector can use to know which vehicles have met the stipulated rules. One only needs to send his or her own motor vehicles registration number to 22846,'' he said.

Last year, there were a total 1,058 accidents, a number that has dropped to 880 this year, a drop he attributes to enforcement of traffic law by all stakeholders.
