Two businessmen, Nabeel Hussain Qureshi and Salman Ahmed Rizvi, who were arrested on Tuesday by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials were on Wednesday arraigned before a court in Mombasa.
The two are accused of being involved in a series of tax evasions schemes that have denied the government Sh126 million in revenue.
The suspects who are directors of Ameen Motors Ltd were released after the court slapped them with a Sh20 million bond.
The bond terms shocked Nabeel who begged Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti to review the amount in vain.
"I am only 23 years old. I have been in Kenya for less than a year. The company owners are in Japan. Please help me," pleaded Nabeel.
The Pakistani national fainted as he was being taken to the cells pending the processing of the bond.
Fortunately, the orderlies and a court clerk moved in swiftly and poured water on him, after which he regained consciousness.
He was then taken to the cells as his colleagues handled the processing of the bond.
According to KRA, the two suspects allegedly evaded paying taxes by filing nil returns in some months and declaring low income in other months between January 2013 and December 2018.
The duo was also charged with making incorrect statements aimed at reducing the company's tax liability.
