Gatuanyaga residents living near River Chania have been asked to exercise extra caution when engaging in their farming activities especially near the shores to avoid being swept away.

The river which has already broken its banks and swept away gabions built on the shores in July, is a high potential risk to residents according to Gatuanyaga Chief, Dominic Mungai.

Speaking on Tuesday at Gatuanyaga during Mashujaa Day celebrations, Mungai also warned of potential landslides and rock rolls

"If need be, we advise residents not to even go to the lowland areas near the river. We also have reports that rocks have started to roll from the upper grounds near the river and they are extremely dangerous if they find anyone there," Mungai said.

He also cautioned parents against allowing children to go playing near the river or when the rain is on saying that they can easily be swept down to the river by rain water.

He, however, asked residents to take advantage of the rains and plant trees and fodder for their animals saying they can sustain high rainfall.
