Residents from Kibera slums on Wednesday challenged the government to build for them toilets and also provide clean drinking water in the slums.

Through Help One Youth group, they held a peaceful demonstration to demand for clean health facilities in the slums.

The residents say that poor waste management has led to the contamination of drinking water leading to many health problems in the slum.

The chairperson of Help One Youth group, Mourine Sewe said that they want the government to form a public inquiry to research and investigate the poor and inadequate sanitation status and its impact on the health of the residents.

Mourine further accused the government of failure to put measures in place to ensure that those living in the informal settlements have good standards of sanitation and access to clean water.

The chairperson said that although other institutions had responded to the lack of sanitary facilities by building toilets and providing water in slums, the situation had not changed since they charge higher fees. Many residents can't afford to pay the fees.
