Nakuru County Environment, Natural Resources, Energy and Water minister Richard Rop has promised to address hawkers grievances to ensure they work in a clean environment .
On Monday, the hawkers presented a petition to the county executive asking him to address sanitation saying it was affecting their businesses.
Speaking in his office Rop said the county government is committed in provision of better services to the hawkers.
“We are taking the issue seriously and in due time we will respond to your plight,” said the county executive.
The hawkers alleged that street children have been littering their workplaces and even urinate there.
Jane Wangari said the situation in the town is wanting.
“The town has changed drastically from a glittering town to a littering town. Poor infrastructure and coordination of solid waste disposal mechanisms form the narrative of its current state of affairs,” said Wangari.
John Mwangi said raw sewerage pipes burst and their content leak and flow, sometimes even from their work places.
The hawkers claimed that the town is filthy with rubbish heaps right from its center and wondered why the county government has not cleared the rubbish that was dumped at railway station.
The hawkers said once it rains, such rubbish will be drained into the sewerage system and block it.
However, Rop told the hawkers that the town will regain its lost glory once the measures put in place by the county government are through.
“The county government is addressing the sewerage system and other environmental issues to ensure residents have a better town,” said Rop.
He, however, urged residents to make the town clean and stop from demanding from the county government to provide cleanliness all the time.
