There is need to educate the girl-child on matters pertaining to her sexuality, Thika West Sub-County deputy gender and social services director, Monicah Muthoni has advised.
Speaking on Wednesday from her office in Thika, Muthoni said the girl-child and especially the one in the remote areas of the county is still ignorant about sex education.
She said due to ignorance, such girls fall prey to abusive men, leading to early pregnancies and marriages, child prostitution and contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
“Women teachers in the public primary schools as well as parents should find time in educating the girl child before getting introduced to the harsh environment where they are not able to defend themselves,” she advised.
“Very little has been done in educating the girl child in Kiambu County and it is evident sometimes back when I went round distributing panties and sanitary towels to several schools. Some of the girls were afraid to take them because of stigma,” she said, adding that it would have been better if they had been educated more on their sexuality.
She said despite sexual harassment being outlawed in society with hefty fines and punishment from court, some people still harass girls sexually especially those from secondary schools.
