Kisii County government has been urged to step in and sponsor sporting activities, as secondary school zonal games kicked off at Kisii University Sports ground amid reports of facing hurdles in its initial stages.

Speaking during the launching of Zonal athletics for Gitembe secondary school, Zonal Coordinator, Jared Omwanza appealed to the county government to step in and salvage the sporting activities, which are currently faced by turmoil to organize.

“We are actually running out of cash, which is of essence as far as these competitions are concerned, I would wish to appeal to the county government of Kisii to always support such events as  we are out to nurture talents,” said Omwanza.

The current heavy down pour in Kisii has also been highlighted as a hiccup, which has greatly affected some of the schools taking into account bad roads outside the town.

Tom Ombweri, District Secretary for Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) said that heavy rains currently experienced in Kisii County and its environs have caused some schools to delay for the tournament.

Deputy Zonal organizer, Peter Monari reiterated his colleagues’ statements, adding that the competitions were meant to nurture talents.

“The students are having amazing talents and we thank the head of these fifteen schools that are present for giving us talents which we are sure will be international figures in the near future.

More than fifteen schools were present and participated in field and track events.
