2018 10,000 metres World U20 champion and the 2019 10,000 metres bronze medalist Rhonex Kipruto and Agnes Tirop, a gold medalist at World Cross Cross Country Championships are the 2019 winners of the Tuskys Great 10K Run Wareng which was held in Eldoret town on Sunday.
Kipruto crossed the finishing line at 28:23:08 followed by Nicholas Korir 28:31:06 and Kibiwott Kandie who took the third position, finishing with 28:34:02.
“The race was very tough but despite the humid weather condition and the tough terrain, I thank God for the win,” said Kipruto, 21.
The athlete who is from Uasin Gishu county said he is looking forward to participating in other local cross country races to build his resiliency to catapult him to international events including the marathon.
In the women category, Agnes Tirop, who in the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships became the second-youngest ever gold medallist in the women's race after Zola Budd led more than 900 women all the way to the finishing point impressively cutting the rope at 32:22:17.
Tirop, 23, was closely trailed by Brilliant Jepkorir 32:22:98 and Irine Cheptum who finished third in 34:26:52.
“I want to thank God for winning this race since the course was very hard. My aim is to participate in international marathons and break world records,” she said.
Winners of both the men and women races were awarded Sh500,000 each.
