Speaking in Nandi County during an Inua Mama event on Saturday, the legislator said the country is broke, and does not have money for a referendum.

"We don't want BBI, now people do not have money. We are not going to spend a penny to do a referendum (Maneno ya BBI hatutaki. Sahi watu hawana pesa. We are not going to spend a penny kufanya referendum)," he said

The intervention of the Aldai legislator comes just a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta urged patience on the BBI, during a meeting with political leaders from Mount Kenya region.

The BBI report is yet to be handed over to the Head of State and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga.

Mr Odinga, who is the chief exponent of the initiative, has said it will usher in a new era of violence-free elections and bring Kenyans together.

It is not clear why the report has not yet been handed over to the two leaders yet the committee compiling it retired for compilation weeks ago.

A few weeks ago, a section of Mount Kenya legislators had vowed to oppose the report, should it recommend a parliamentary system that will see elected leaders elect the country's Head of State.
