Speaking in his office on Monday, Ndungu said the farmers had responded positively and adopted the NMK initiative which aims to create food security in the country.

The officer said the initiative which was tailored to empower self help groups and community based organisations to increase productivity in crop and livestock farming has changed lives in Limuru.

Ndungu said the project was implemented at group and individual levels, with some people adopting various technology to become agri-business farmers who can be emulated in the county and outside the county.

He said that the assessment reports submitted to his office indicated a 80% success rate where many farmers had adopted the NMK project and started livestock and crop farming projects such as poultry farming, potato growing, dairy farming among others.

The officer said that the most successful of the NMK projects was Thauri Farmers S.G.H based in Limuru, a self help group with 20 members which was given a grant of Sh150,000.

He said the group used the money to start a poultry programme that enabled them gain income from the sale of eggs, chicks and cocks.

They also bought a new incubator, started diversified cabbage farming and improved the nutrition for residents by availing to them affordable products. Most of the proceeds were pumped back to the project, therefore creating more profits to the group.

Ndungu has urged more people to join and adopt the NMK programme as it was a reliable way to ensure hunger was eradicated in the region and her environs.

“The project will go a long way in reducing poverty, hunger and food insecurity. The government is very willing to help the residents so long as they get registered and write proposals requesting for funds. I hope ten years from now, Limuru Sub-County would be the most secure place in terms of food security,” said Ndungu.
