Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has said that the Mulembe nation is united.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV's JKL show on Wednesday, Atwoli dismissed claims that the Luhya community has always been divided.
He opined that it takes decades to find a leader who can unite a community when a top leader in the community dies. He gave the example of the founding father of the country Mzee Jomo Kenyatta who united the Kikuyus.
He noted that the late Njenga Karume was another leader who cannot be forgotten. Atwoli argued that Luhya leaders might not speak in one voice but that doesn’t mean they are not united.
"Can I tell you? Luhyas are united and Luhyas are one. Luhyas have no sub-tribes they have sub-clans. Leaders can differ and you know when you lose the leadership, when you lose the topmost leaders who dominated leadership in your community it takes you twenty, thirty years to get another one," said Atwoli.
"After Jomo Kenyatta how many years did it take the central people to get Kibaki and Uhuru? It is not easy. Like now the person who used to bring the Kikuyus together was Njenga Karume. Do we still have any other Njenga Karume," he added.
Atwoli further said that he fully supports the recent calls for a constitutional review.
