A youth group from Nyamira County that has been rallying against pre-marital sex among the youth in the region has won the backing of the county government.
The group dubbed ‘modern youths’ has been traversing the county especially in learning institutions and trading centers to disseminate the message on dangers of premarital sex among the youthful population.
Speaking to this writer on Thursday at their offices in Nyansiongo, the group's chairman Mike Orori revealed they got an offer by the county government's department of Health.
“When we started a year ago, we thought of reaching the youth in secondary schools and trading centers of which we have done. We have since met hundreds of youths from the county and I think we have partly achieved our objectives.
But I must thank the county government through the Health department for agreeing to partner with us to reach more youths,” he said.
According to him, the Chief Officer for Health, Douglas Bosire has authorised the department to cater for transport to facilitate mobility of those involved in the voluntary exercise.
“He confirmed the release of a county vehicle that will be taking us around to reach many youths as possible. They have also offered to deploy five counselors to join our team,” he added.
He said the support would see the group target at least 200,000 young people in the county and offer sexual education to avert cases of HIV and Aids among the youths.
“Many reports have been released putting youths at the top in Nyanza for being vulnerable to HIV and Aids. Perhaps we can now reach at least 200,000 with that enormous support,” he said.
