A storm is looming between residents of workers area in Kiamaina ward over accusations that some were taking advantage of others by not paying for their garbage fees.
Allegedly, the residents have allegedly formed a habit of depositing their waste after the county lorry has left. They say that this had led to heaps of uncollected garbage that have been made worse by the on-going rains.
“We are living in a very poor scenery because of the high levels of irresponsibility and ignorance by some of our neighbours,” noted Alice Waitherero, a resident.
The situation is made worse by the fact that the area bordering Kiamaina slum where the levels of waste disposal methods are pathetic.
Normally, we have designated people who traverse different city estate selling garbage polythene paper bags with residents having to deposit their garbage every Friday at one pick up point so that county garbage trucks picks them up.
“The paper bags go for as little as 20 shillings but our neighbours are just ignorant over the issue. Is it that they don’t know that they are subjecting our children; including theirs to diseases or what is their problem?” wondered Meshack Ochieng.
Maurice Chadaba, a garbage truck driver says that the problem is with the residents because such people “can be traced and punished for their bad behaviour”.
“Ours is to pick the garbage, not to find out who dumps after we make our normal round. The problem of our people is that they have very bad relationships in that some don’t even talk to their next door neighbours, so somebody may be doing this to punish the neighbour not knowing that he is also being affected,” the driver noted.
The uncollected garbage heaps have accumulated into stray dog dens and emanate a foul smell with the residents saying that they were living on a real embedding health predicament.
