The Thika West public health office will be scaling up surveillance in Kiandutu Slums to prevent the possibility of a cholera outbreak during the anticipated heavy rains.

The sub-county public health officer Dr Austine Milliano said they singled out Kiandutu Slum because it was more prone to the outbreak of water-borne diseases than any other area in the sub-county.

"During the last cholera outbreak at the middle of this year, Kiandutu was the first to be hit by the outbreak in the sub-county. With the kind of expected rains, we cannot afford to take chances," said Milliano on Tuesday in his Thika Town office.

The public health officer said that roadside food joints, food hawkers and water vendors will be on their radar throughout to ensure that they met the required health and safety standards.

Milliano also warned that his office would not hesitate to close down joints found operating in unhygienic conditions.

"The outbreak of cholera at Mathioya in the neighbouring Murang'a County two weeks ago has kept our department on high alert," he said.
